Drug Formulary
The Drug Administration and Control Authority of Ethiopia recognizing the urgent need for information, appropriate to the different categories of health personnel, particularly to those working in the periphery, has developed

1. Drug Formulary for Health centers, and

2. Drug Formulary for District Hospitals (PDF Document).

The Formularies aim to provide doctors, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals working at or below district hospital level with sound up to date information about the use of medicines. And hence the central goal of the formulary is to help prescribers in the appropriate choice of treatment and to make prescribers follow uniform choice of treatment.

The drug formularies are an extended version of drug list, which offers information on the drugs.  These formulary are prepared based on the lists of drugs developed by Drug Administration and Control Authority for Health Centers and District hospitals, respectively.

Drugs that are generally prescribed at Health center or district hospital level are included and hence the formulary provides ready access to key information on the selection, prescribing, dispensing and administration of medicines available at District Hospital level and below it.

Information included in each formularies
1. Drug name - listing of the drug by generic name
2. Available formulations
3. Pharmacodynamics
4. Pharmacokinetics
5. Therapeutic uses
6. Notes on drug use and regimen
7. Adverse effects
8. Contraindications
9. Precautions
10. Drug interactions
11. Drug toxicity
12. Storage requirements

The formularies are helpful in strengthening the concept of rational use of drugs. It is useful for a rapid survey of drug data when needed.
