Pharmaceutical Microbiology Laboratory Division
Pharmaceutical microbiology laboratory division has the duty
of performing microbial quality control on pharmaceuticals,
imported and/or manufactured locally.
Current Services
The Microbiology Lab Division
offers the following services:

Sterility testing of Parentals, ophthalmic preparations, and
sterile
medical devices

Pyrogen
testing (by rabbit fever response method
The Microbiology Lab Division plans to offer the following
services in the near future:

Microbiological assay of antibiotics

Antimicrobial
preservative efficacy test

Bacterial endotoxin (LAL) test

Microbial contamination (limit) test

Vaccine quality control
The
Pharmaceutical Microbiology Laboratory Division has the
potential to provide:
- Serve
as a training center with regard to the microbial
quality of
pharmaceuticals

Conduct
research, especially on causes of antimicrobial
resistance
(problems associated with potency of antibiotics)

Carry
out microbial quality control of herbal drugs (degree of
contamination)
Facility
The laboratory has five separate rooms; these are:
Laboratory Equipments and Instruments
The laboratory full fills the equipment list for a medium
size pharmaceutical control laboratory, for microbiology
unit, based on the list in Appendix 2, Good Practice for
National Pharmaceutical Control Laboratories, Annex 3, WHO,
2002.
Staff
The laboratory currently has a total of 6 professionals and
technical staff composed of 3 Pharmacists, 2 Biologists, and
1 Lab Assistant.
